Last year in 2016, a group of Nebraska farmers were diagnosed with cancer; they have sued Monsanto, the maker of agricultural chemicals and GMO seed. The farmers claim that glyphosate, the popular Monsanto herbicide, triggered them to develop cancer and that the company deliberately misinformed the public about the dangers of the world’s most widely used herbicide.
The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Lincoln, Nebraska. The farmers are seeking disciplinary damages, claiming defective design, failure to warn, carelessness and breach of warranty.
What is the purpose of roundup?
Introduction: Roundup is an herbicide is used to kill weeds and grasses that are unappealing or damage crops. Its active ingredient is “glyphosate”.
Note: Monsanto discovered the potential use of glyphosate as an herbicide in the year 1970, and began marketing it in 1974.
Coming back to the lawsuit filed….The lawsuit was named as Monsanto roundup lawsuit…..The lawsuit also claims that Monsanto “concealed or systematically sought to discredit” research showing links between glyphosate and cancer and continues to do so.
In addition, “Monsanto even defended forged data and has attacked legitimate studies that exposed Roundup’s dangers. Monsanto led a campaign of distortion to convince government agencies, farmers as well as the general population that Roundup is safe.
For years, the company has continuously denied the dangers of the product from the date of extends to the date of this Complaint,” the lawsuit states.
Dangers and Side Effects Of Roundup Chemical
The most serious side effect that farmers have faced after getting in contact with glyphosate (Roundup’s main ingredient) is the development of cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leukemia, B-cell lymphoma, and multiple myeloma.
The people who were the most at risk of developing cancer were farm workers and other individuals, including employees in garden centers, nurseries, and landscapers. You can even read the news here, (Questions about EPA-Monsanto collusion raised in cancer lawsuits).
